Can Utility Supply Chains Keep Pace with AI Data Center Demand? Seven Procurement Strategies to Power the Future
St. Petersburg, FL (August 14, 2026) – Conrad Snover, CEO at ProcureAbility, recently featured in POWER Magazine discussing AI-driven utility procurement challenges.
As artificial intelligence (AI) adoption accelerates, the gap between electricity demand and grid capacity is widening rapidly. While this trend is often framed as a power generation and transmission challenge, it is equally a procurement challenge. The materials, equipment, and skilled labor required to build both data centers and grid infrastructure are in increasingly tight supply. For utilities, procurement is emerging as a critical lever to maintain reliability, manage costs, and keep pace with demand.
Data center growth is being driven by the rapid adoption of artificial intelligence technologies. Industry estimates suggest AI adoption is occurring faster than previous waves of digital transformation, including the internet and personal computing.
In response, hyperscale technology companies are scaling investment in data center infrastructure at an unprecedented rate. These investments translate directly into rising electricity demand and a surge in interconnection requests. Data centers currently account for roughly 4% of U.S. electricity consumption and could reach as much as 17% within the next few years. More broadly, projections indicate that data centers could drive nearly half of U.S. electricity demand growth through 2030 as global demand for data center power more than doubles.
